The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe is the steam hauled rain which operates on the Outeniqualand Preserved Railway between George and Knysna in the heart of the world famous Garden Route. During the peak tourist seasons the train is usually run as a passenger train, but during off peaks, freight is also carried. You are invited to spend a little time on our Outeniqua Choo Tjoe reliving the past when the pace was slower and when traveling was half the fun getting there. The locomotives most commonly used on the line are class 24 (built in 1948) and class 19D (placed in service between 1937 and 1948). However, other historic locomotives dating from as early as 1896 can also be seen on the line from time to time. They include classes 7A, 7B, GB, 14CRB, GMA and 19C. Class 32 diesel locomotives are also used to haul heavier freight trains on the line. Carriages used on the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe date from 1903 to 1950 and are all of the wooden side-door type, introduced on the suburban railway systems of earlier years. No train service 16 May to 14 August.

Enjoy the spectrum of Plettenberg Bay’s marine wildlife; coastal nature reserves and pristine beaches … discover the world of whales, dolphins, seals, sharks and marine birds. Ocean Safaris is South Africa’s biggest professional whale and dolphin watching company. Together with MTN Centre for Dolphin Studies, a research institute under the directorship of South Africa’s leading dolphin researcher, Dr Vic Cockcroft, they offer the marine eco-experience of a lifetime. The CDS and Ocean Safaris operator boat-based whale watching permits for both Plettenberg Bay and Knysna respectively. So whether you prefer the dramatic Knysna Heads or the diverse Plettenberg Bay, Ocean Safaris and the CDS offer you “The Best Seafari by Far”. The permit allows you to come “within touching distance” of whales – the difference between watching whales from 300 metres (the legal limit for non-permitted operators) and hearing the whales breathe at 50 metres … it’s a WHALE OF A DIFFERENCE! Together, the CDS and Ocean Safaris form the only relationship between non-profit research and commercial marine eco-tourism in the country. What you will discover about whales, dolphins, seals and other marine life during your trip with Ocean Safaris results from more than 30 years combined experience. Proceeds from each boat trip support the research, education and awareness goals of the Centre for Dolphin Studies. Join us for an informed “up close and personal” encounter with some of South Africa’s most spectacular wildlife, in line with our motto “OBSERVE AND CONSERVE”.

Blackwater Tubing

Starting with a steep descent down a “rope ladder” into the almost inaccessible canyon and ending at the suspension bridge in the Tsitsikamma National Park, Blackwater Tubing on the Storms River is the ultimate kloofing experience. The trip is scenic, exhilarating and always spectacular, with cliffs almost meeting over your head to block out the indigenous forest. The half-day trip starts at 08h30 in Storms River and you return to the Adventure Centre at approximately 14h00.

The Awesome Storms river Gorge Challenge

The challenge starts with a spectacular 110 metre abseil into the gorge … and continues down the river in a tube through rapids and long black pools to the gorge exit point ± 2 hours down stream. A steep climb out using a “rope ladder” takes one through scenic indigenous forest to the mountain bike rendezvous and the first refreshment point. The breathtaking mountain bike trail meanders through the indigenous Tsitsikamma forest. The low water bridge is the start of a short steep uphill into pine plantations and the route traverses the gorge to the lookout point above the Tsitsikamma National Park. This is the turn around point for the final phase back up the old Storms River Pass and ends at the adventure centre in the village.

Woodcutters Journey

Journey down the old Storms River Pass and experience the indigenous forest from the comfort of a specially designed vehicle. Follow the elephant trail down to the water passing tree ferns, stinkwoods, yellowwoods and many other species, whilst hearing about the history of the area and the local fauna and flora. Watch out for a glimpse of the elusive Narina Trogon and Knysna Loerie. Outspan where the wagons have since the last century and enjoy a light lunch or tea next to the Storms River.

Abseiling Storms River Gorge

The 35 metre abseil is ideal for all adventure seekers, irrespective of experience. The river meanders 80 metres below while the dominant Paul Sauer Bridge looms above. The rock formations are breathtaking! A chain ladder provides a safe exit from the gorge and professionals are always on hand assisting.

Bass & Fly Fishing

The Bass Route is a unique experience that is designed to give anglers the opportunity to fish more than a single dam a day. The Tsitsikamma boasts an unexplored opportunity for bass fishing in one of the most pristine settings in the country. A series of dams teaming with fish exists along a rural route with the backdrop of the Tsitsikamma Mountains. Catches of 3kg bass are not uncommon. A strong release ethic is encouraged. Minimum group size: 2.

Eco Adventure Cruises

The trip up the otherwise inaccessible Storms River Gorge departs from the old jetty below the suspension bridge and runs every 40 minutes. Huge caverns are interspersed on either side of the river, some of which extend upwards for 20 metres providing a habitat for rare bat species. Awesome cliff faces extend 150 metres above the boat, and block out the sunlight as one proceeds silently through the “black water”. A the turn around point the boat lingers, hopeful to capture a glimpse of the resident fish eagles which are sometimes seen. A solitary Knysna Loerie lingers overhead and then disappears above the gorge disenchanted at the intrusion.

Scuba Diving

Experience a weightless, silent world of unequalled beauty. We offer courses for the whole family, from a couple of hours to a whole week. Dive Charters – We can take you on a wonderful dive in the Tsitsikamma National Park. See new reefs, unspoiled and waiting for you. Rich life of colourful fish, coral and other sea creatures. Snorkeling – if scuba is not your game, come and do a ranquillit course. It’s easy; it’s fun and opens a new world to you.
