Cape Town

The most beautiful city in South Africa, the city of Cape Town is dominated by a towering, table-shaped mountain, set on a peninsula of soaring, rocky heights, forests and valleys, where two oceans converge- Indian and Atlantic. A bustling metropolis, Cape Town is a shopper’s delight with shopping and entertainment centres to satisfy the most arduous of shoppers; the picturesque V & A Waterfront situated on Cape Town’s working harbour, being just one of the many. Firmly positioned on the international map, Cape Town offers a myriad things to do and places to see, whatever your tastes, inclinations or budget.

Table Mountain

Imagine the site the first explorers witnessed, coming round the Cape, only to see this majestic flat-topped monolith rising up out of the sea. Just over 1 000 metres (3 281 feet) high, Table Mountain towers over the city centre and can be seen from virtually every area in Cape Town. There is an option to take the revolving cable car to the summit, certainly an extremely scenic ride. And for the more energetic, walking up the mountain is very rewarding. There are walks of varying degrees of difficulty, with most hikes taking between two and four hours. After which, a refreshing drink at the restaurant at the top is most welcome!

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Situated against the slopes of Table Mountain, the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens features 36 hectares (89 acres) of purely indigenous plants. Home to one of the world’s six floral kingdoms, Fynbos, the beautifully landscaped gardens are interspersed with scenic trails and several themed gardens. In summer, Kirstenbosch features regular classical, jazz and popular music concerts in the garden.

Cape Point

Situated only 50 kilometres (31 miles) outside of Cape Town, Cape Point falls within the Good Hope Nature Reserve. The park contains a wide range of indigenous plants, 250 bird species as well as chacma baboons, caracal and a variety of antelope. Visitors to Cape point have a range of activities to pick from: hiking, cycling, angling, surfing and windsurfing. There is an option to take a scenic walk up to the old lighthouse, offering spectacular views across False Bay. Alternatively, those that are less energetic, may take a ride up on the new funicular.

Winelands

There are a number of Wineland Routes situated just outside of Cape Town. Most of the many world-class wine estates in the region offer wine tasting and tours of their cellars and vineyards. Towns in the Cape Winelands include the leafy Stellenbosch, South Africa’s oldest town, which boasts one of the premier universities in the country. Similarly, scenic towns like Paarl and Somerset West offer visitors a more tranquil and peaceful appreciation of the Cape surrounds, while still being close to the city.
